ISP Options:
After the subscriber pays the monthly access fee, he or
she then has access to the internet. However, the speed at which different
ISPs transfer data varies widely.
Internet connection speeds can be divided into two general
categories: dial-up and broadband. Dial-up connections require the use
of a phone line and normally have a connection speed of 56 kbit/s or less.
Broadband connections can be ISDN, Wireless Broadband Access, Cable Modem,
DSL, Fiber Optics, Satellite, or Ethernet. Broadband access requires no
telephone line and is always online except in the case of ISDN, which
is a circuit switching technology, and the connection speed for broadband
usually varies between 64 kb and 20 Mb per second or more.
Virtual Internet Service Providers:
A Virtual Internet Service Provider, or vISP, resells to
the general public internet access purchased from a wholesale ISP. The
vISP provides services to the consumer that go beyond basic internet connectivity
such as e-mail, web-hosting, and technical support. The vISP performs
all accounting and authentication functions then bills their users. This
allows larger ISPs to gain larger returns on their investments into what
is usually a geographically large, high capacity network. Smaller ISPs
can then use this network to provide internet connectivity service to
consumers in areas where it would have otherwise been unavailable.
